LMYPHEDEMA FAQ’S

How do I know if I have Lymphedema?

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms at varying levels will depend on how severe the lymphedema is. Symptoms of lymphedema include: swelling in an arm or leg, which may include the fingers or toes, feeling of fullness, puffiness or heaviness in the arm, leg or genital area. Clothes fitting tighter on one side vs the other.

How do I find an MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage) therapist?

The best way to find a therapist is to look at one of the following resources.

1. The Lymphedema Association of Ontario  www.lymphontario.ca
2. Vodder School International at www.vodderschool.com
3. You can also reach out to the Lymphedema Awareness Network LaSalle Windsor Essex County on Facebook for assistance and Support Group information.

What is MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a light, skin stretching massage that is designed to help move lymph fluid back into remaining lymph vessels and reroute it out of your swollen limb.

What is CDT (Complete Decongestive Therapy)?

Complete decongestive therapy (CDT) is an intensive program that combines many of  different treatment approaches including bandaging, compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise, and self care. Typically runs for 8-12 weeks with 2-3 treatments per week. The treatment plan in dependent on the severity of your Lymphedema.

Can I manage my Lymphedema?

Yes absolutely! With a great self care plan including dry brushing, rebounding, skin care, self MLD, compression garments and breathing exercises you can manage your Lymphedema very well on your own. Some with a more severe case of Lymphedema will require frequent visits for MLD or CDT with a therapist along with self care.

Does Lymphedema ever go away?

There are many people who have mild lymphedema whose symptoms go away with treatment and never become a major problem. For others, the condition does worsen. The later stages of lymphedema often can't be completely reversed because the tissue under the skin has been damaged. Once you have had damage to your lymphatic system you are at risk for Lymphedema for life.

What are things I can do at home to manage my Lymphedema?

Having an excellent Self Care Plan is key! This can include:

  • Self MLD (Manual Lymph Drainage)

  • Rebounding (light bouncing on a mini trampoline)

  • Dry Brushing (lightly stroking the skin toward the heart using a soft bristle brush)

  • Breathing Techniques

  • 100% compliance with Compression Garments (some mayweed overnight garments too)

  • Staying active with regular walks or bike rides

  • Excellent skin care
